Kekova, one of the most enchanting corners of the Mediterranean, captivates visitors at first sight with its deep blue waters, lush nature, and atmosphere intertwined with history. Located near the Demre district of Antalya, this unique region—famously known as the “Sunken City”—is one of the most popular travel routes in Türkiye.

Kekova’s sparkling sea under the sun, its golden-toned shores, and the historical traces stretching along the coastline turn the region into an open-air museum. Nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List, Kekova is a true Mediterranean paradise with its 7.5-kilometer coastline, sheltered bays, and crystal-clear waters.

Kekova Island and the Sunken City

Kekova Island, which gives the region its name, is a rocky landmass situated off the coasts of Kaleköy and Üçağız. Its ancient Lycian name is “Dolichiste,” and throughout history it was also referred to as “Kakava.” Covering an area of approximately 4.5 km², the island has no permanent settlement; accommodation and dining options are located on the mainland shores of Kaleköy, which can only be reached by boat.

On the northern shores of the island lie the remains of ancient Dolchiste, submerged after a major earthquake in the 2nd century AD. Although the settlement briefly revived during the Byzantine period, it was eventually abandoned due to Arab raids. Tersane Bay in the northwest—once an ancient harbor—draws attention with its Byzantine church and structures belonging to the ancient city of Xera.

Regional Structure and Ancient Cities

Covering a vast area of 260 km², the Kekova Region includes Kekova Island as well as the important Lycian settlements of Kaleköy, Üçağız (Simena), Aperlae, Dolchiste, and Teimioussa. For history enthusiasts, every step reveals a new discovery; for nature lovers, the region offers breathtaking landscapes.

Kaleköy (Simena)

Known locally simply as “Kale,” Kaleköy is one of the rare settlements with no land access. Built upon the ancient Lycian city of Simena, this small village features historic walls rising from the sea, a hilltop castle, and submerged ruins lining the coast—creating a truly captivating view.

Üçağız (Teimioussa)

Located just 1 kilometer from Kaleköy, Üçağız is a peaceful stop where visitors find tranquility thanks to its natural and quiet atmosphere. Formerly known as Teimioussa, the village takes its name from its location, meaning “three exits.” The ancient ruins of Teimioussa lie immediately east of the village, reflecting the region’s rich historical texture.
